Dallas: Clapper is really taking off lately. With all the buzz about a possible TikTok ban in the US, people are flocking to this new app. Founded in 2020, Clapper is based in Texas and offers a unique ad-free experience for users.

It’s now the third most downloaded free app on iPhones. Bita Motiie, Clapper’s head of operations, mentioned that every time TikTok’s ban comes up in the news, they see a spike in new users.

Motiie said, “We’ve seen skyrocketing numbers of users joining us recently due to the fact that people are actively now looking for an alternative.” The trending topic on Clapper is even #TikTokRefugees.

Interestingly, another app called Xiaohongshu is also gaining traction, hitting the top spot in downloads. The US Congress passed a law last year that could force TikTok to shut down unless its parent company sells it.

TikTok warned that it might go dark in the US soon if the Supreme Court doesn’t extend the deadline. Motiie emphasized that they’re focused on helping TikTok users transition to Clapper.

Clapper has similar features to TikTok but is only for users 17 and older and doesn’t have ads. Motiie explained, “People are being bombarded with ads 24/7 through their phones, and we want to provide a safe haven.”

Creators can earn money through gifts during livestreams and can sell subscriptions or items. Clapper takes a 30% cut from these earnings.

While the content can be a bit raw, users can filter out “not safe for work” material. Clapper is also working on hiring more community managers and using AI moderation tools.

Currently, Clapper has about 20 staff members and hasn’t sought outside funding since raising $3 million in 2023. They’re profitable and not looking for more investment right now.

Industry experts suggest Clapper needs to act fast to keep its momentum going. Gigi Robinson, a creator with a following on TikTok, is considering posting more on Clapper as a backup plan.

She noted that many creators are feeling the pressure and realizing they shouldn’t rely solely on one platform for their audience and income.
