Toronto: Chrystia Freeland is officially running to be the next leader of the Liberal Party and Canada’s prime minister. She shared her plans on social media, saying she’ll kick off her campaign on Sunday.

In her statement, Freeland emphasized, “I’m running to fight for Canada.” She also wrote an op-ed in the Toronto Star, vowing not to back down from Donald Trump, who plans to impose hefty tariffs on products from Canada and Mexico.

Freeland has experience dealing with Trump’s tariffs from his first term. As foreign affairs minister, she managed a strong response to his import taxes on Canadian steel and aluminum back in 2018.

Interestingly, she’s expected to oppose consumer carbon pricing, which is a significant policy from her own Liberal government. Her announcement follows Mark Carney’s campaign launch in Edmonton, making the race more competitive.

Former cabinet minister Marie-Claude Bibeau showed her support for Freeland, praising her ability to stand up to Trump and defend Quebec’s interests. Freeland had to resign from her cabinet position in December after Trudeau replaced her as finance minister.

With Freeland and Carney as the leading candidates, the race is heating up. Other potential candidates, like Karina Gould and Jonathan Wilkinson, are also expected to announce their decisions soon.

Time is running out for others to join the race, which wraps up on March 9. It’s going to be an interesting few weeks ahead!
