Fort Worth: This week, the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo is buzzing with excitement. Athletes have been gearing up all year for the Chisholm Challenge, a special event for equestrians with disabilities.

Laura Cate Graham-Newton was all smiles as she rode her horse, Bodie. “He’s a good boy,” she said, giving him a gentle pat. It’s clear she loves her time in the saddle.

More than 200 riders from 18 equine therapy centers across North Texas are taking part in this event. It’s a big deal for everyone involved.

Laura Cate’s mom, Melissa, watched proudly. “She has scoliosis, but when she’s on a horse, she’s as straight as a board!” she said, beaming with pride.

As Laura Cate rode in a trail event, her family cheered her on. In the arena, it’s all about the bond between horse and rider, not their challenges.

Debbie Frahm from Wings of Hope Equitherapy Riding Center shared how important this is. “This gives them something they can do independently,” she explained. It’s all about achieving something special.

Debbie Head from the Chisholm Challenge called it “their Super Bowl.” For three days, these riders experience freedom and joy on horseback.

While there are ribbons and buckles for winners, the focus is on fun. “Did you have fun?” Graham asked Laura Cate after her ride. “That’s what we really come for!”

Laura Cate proudly took home a blue ribbon and a belt buckle. “She’s been so excited about it,” her mom said. “That buckle means a lot to her!”

“I’m tired,” Laura Cate said with a big smile. “I’ll probably go to bed early tonight.”

The Chisholm Challenge continues through Wednesday, January 15, bringing joy to all involved.
