Chicago: Debra Kerr had a vision when she became president and CEO of Intuit. She wanted to make it a more inviting place for everyone. Now, after ten years, that dream is coming true.

The museum is set to reopen on April 25, following a $10 million renovation. It’s now called the Intuit Art Museum and has tripled in size. The new space includes a glass storefront, several exhibition galleries, and a community area.

After being closed since September 2023, the museum will celebrate with a grand reopening party on April 26 and a panel discussion on April 27 at Expo Chicago.

Kerr hopes the changes will attract more visitors and highlight the self-taught artists the museum supports. She mentioned that people often wanted to see more art when they visited, and now they will get that chance.

The museum’s transformation was made possible by a $5 million grant from the City of Chicago and other donations. The new name reflects its mission as a museum dedicated to artists.

Kerr also pointed out that the term “outsider art” has faced criticism. Many artists feel it makes them seem separate from the mainstream, which is not the intention.

Visitors will notice new features like an entrance ramp, an elevator, and beautiful exposed brick. The galleries will showcase the museum’s permanent collection and special exhibitions, including a revamped display of Henry Darger’s work.

One of the most exciting additions is a community space for learning and engagement. It will have a beverage station, books, and even a storytelling booth. Staff will be available to help guests learn more about the art.

The first special exhibition will focus on works by immigrant artists, showcasing their unique experiences and stories. Kerr believes their art is powerful and deserves recognition.

Chicago is a great home for the Intuit Art Museum, which was founded in 1991. Kerr hopes the reopening coinciding with Expo Chicago will bring in more visitors to this unique venue.

“We’re one of the few museums in the world that focuses exclusively on this art,” she said. “It’s a brand new jewel in Chicago’s crown, and we’re excited to share it.”

The museum will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, with extended hours on the third Thursday of each month. Admission is $15, but free for members and visitors under 25.
