Cheverly’s mayor addresses the $40 million lawsuit against Bladensburg over a development dispute

Mayor Kayce Munyeneh made it clear that Cheverly is serious about this lawsuit. They’ve filed two lawsuits, one to stop the annexation and another seeking $40 million in damages. Cheverly claims that Bladensburg’s actions could hurt their redevelopment plans financially.
The Hospital Hill site used to be the Prince George’s Hospital Center. After the hospital moved in 2021, Cheverly saw a chance to redevelop the area. They had been planning to annex it since early 2021 but paused when asked by local authorities.
Then, out of the blue, Bladensburg decided to annex the same site without telling Cheverly. When Cheverly found out, they promised to take legal action if Bladensburg went ahead with their plans.
Cheverly’s first lawsuit aims to stop Bladensburg’s annexation process, while the second one is about the financial damages they claim to have suffered. Mayor Munyeneh expressed disappointment that it came to this, hoping for a better resolution.
Bladensburg’s Mayor Takisha James defended their actions, stating they followed the law and are committed to transparency. She emphasized that they want to serve all residents fairly and will respond to Cheverly’s complaint.
Despite the tension, Mayor Munyeneh hopes to settle things amicably outside of court, but she’s ready to fight for Cheverly’s interests in this development.
