A jury found Monsanto liable for illnesses linked to PCBs at a Monroe school, impacting students and parents.

This trial is just one of many involving former students and parents from the Sky Valley Education Center. Over the past three years, Monsanto has faced more than $1.6 billion in verdicts related to these cases. However, the company claims that many of these verdicts are still under review or appeal.
A spokesperson for Monsanto expressed their disappointment with the jury’s decision, noting that they were found in favor of 11 out of 15 plaintiffs. They plan to challenge the verdicts for the four plaintiffs who were awarded damages, arguing that the evidence showed low or non-existent PCB levels that couldn’t have caused the alleged injuries.
Monsanto is also involved in a separate case in Missouri, aiming to recover legal costs related to PCB litigation. They believe the trial court made errors that could lead to a retrial, especially since the case involves complex legal issues across different states.
PCBs are often called “forever chemicals” due to their long-lasting nature and are known to be harmful to human health. Research indicates they can cause a range of serious health problems, including neurological and developmental issues. Despite the jury’s decision, Monsanto highlighted that they were favored in the majority of the cases presented.
