York: On January 14, 2025, William Hose, a former York police chief and sheriff, was honored at the York Expo Center. It was a special day for him and his family.

Michael Muldrow, the current York City Police Commissioner, often attends memorials for past officers. He felt something was missing. He wanted to celebrate the lives of those who served, not just mourn them.

Muldrow shared his thoughts, saying he wished those honored could see how much they were loved and appreciated. The audience stood in applause when they surprised Bill Hose with a tribute.

Bill, known as “Bill” to everyone, was seated with his family when the surprise was announced. He was genuinely touched by the crowd’s warm response.

Dignitaries, fellow officers, and family members shared stories about Bill’s long career in law enforcement. Muldrow introduced a police cruiser dedicated to Hose, featuring his signature and his famous quote, “Just Do the Right Thing.”

Bill explained that people often asked him for the right answer to their problems. His advice was simple: look within and do the right thing. He served with the York City Police for 29 years, including 11 years as chief, and was York County Sheriff from 1996 to 2007.

The Hose family’s connection to the York City Police goes back to the early 1900s. Bill’s great-grandfather, Jacob Hose, was the police chief, and his family has continued this tradition of service.

Former York Mayor William Althaus, who served from 1982 to 1994, also spoke at the event. He credited Bill for much of their success during his time in office and expressed his desire to maintain their friendship for years to come.

This celebration truly highlighted Bill Hose’s legacy and the impact he made in York County.
