Los Angeles: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has delayed the announcement of the 2025 Oscar nominees again. This is due to the wildfires raging through Southern California for over a week now.

They’ve pushed the nominations to January 23, originally set for January 9. The fires are still active and are expected to worsen with high winds hitting Los Angeles County soon.

The Academy expressed their sorrow over the fires’ impact, noting the significant losses in the community. They’ve extended the voting deadline to January 17 for voters to finalize their picks.

Initially, voting was supposed to wrap up on January 12. Although a luncheon for nominees on February 12 is canceled, the award ceremony on March 2 at the Dolby Theatre is still on track.

Some big names like Adrien Brody, Timothée Chalamet, and Ariana Grande are among the favorites for nominations. Sadly, Brody and other stars like Billy Crystal and Mandy Moore have lost homes to the wildfires.

As of Monday, four fires have scorched over 62 square miles and claimed at least 24 lives in the Los Angeles area. The largest, the Palisades Fire, is only 14% contained after a week of destruction.
