Calgary: Construction crews are feeling pretty good about the new events center for the Flames. They’ve got all the permits for Scotia Place, and things are about to get busy.

They’ve already dug down nearly 40 feet, and Bob Hunter from the project committee says the design is almost done. The team took ideas from other NHL arenas in places like Detroit and Edmonton, which inspired the sunken arena floor.

Hunter mentioned that a lot of thought goes into the design. The idea is to have the arena bowl 40 feet down, so when you walk in, you’re at street level. Pretty cool, right?

The digging will continue until spring, with more underground work and soil removal before they start pouring the foundation in May. By August, if the weather cooperates, folks will start seeing some real changes.

Foundation walls will go up first, then they’ll add columns, stairs, elevators, and ramps. By early 2026, Hunter expects the arena’s shape to be visible.

He believes you’ll see a major arena taking form, though it might not be capped off just yet. The $900 million project is still on track to be done by 2027, just in time for the Flames’ 2027-28 season.

This new arena will hold 18,400 for hockey and 20,000 for concerts. Plus, it’ll host various community events, with plans for a community rink and dining options.

They’re also designing it to be fully electrified and net-zero by 2050. Exciting stuff!
