Calgary MP George Chahal endorses Mark Carney as the new leader of the Liberal Party ahead of Carney’s announcement in Edmonton.
Chahal shared a letter on social media early Wednesday, saying Carney, the former Bank of Canada Governor, is the perfect fit for the role. He believes Carney has the experience and leadership skills to tackle today’s global challenges and seize economic opportunities.
Chahal hinted that Carney will announce his intention to run for the leadership position, which is up for grabs after Justin Trudeau’s recent resignation. He even compared Carney to former PM Lester B. Pearson, calling him a “great public servant.”
Carney’s roots are in Fort Smith, NWT, but he grew up in Edmonton and graduated from St. Francis Xavier High School. Chahal mentioned that Alberta’s spirit of hard work and perseverance shaped Carney, giving him a unique perspective to represent all Canadians.
Chahal also pointed out that Carney’s father ran for office in Edmonton back in 1980, showing a family commitment to public service. He emphasized that Carney isn’t just a career politician; his dedication lies with his country, community, faith, and family.
With Trudeau stepping down, Carney’s name has been floating around as a potential successor, alongside others like Chrystia Freeland and Karina Gould. Meanwhile, several prominent figures, including Mélanie Joly and Anita Anand, have already ruled out running for the leadership.
