Sanford: You remember the “Calendar Girls,” right? Those brave British women who posed nude for a calendar to raise money for cancer research? Their story was a big deal and even inspired a movie.

Now, the theatrical version is lighting up the stage at Theater West End. The show is so popular that they’ve added extra matinees to keep up with ticket demand.

The comedy is all about women breaking free from British modesty and embracing their true selves. It’s a beautiful reminder of friendship, much like “Steel Magnolias,” and shows what love and support can achieve when people come together.

Annie and John, played by Janine Papin and Brian Love, are ready to tackle challenges in this production. The director, Ben Gaetanos, has gathered a fantastic cast that really shines on stage. Leading ladies Cynthia Beckert and Janine Papin even snagged top honors in the Sentinel’s 2024 Critic’s Choice awards.

Beckert plays Chris, the enthusiastic go-getter whose excitement sometimes overshadows her common sense. Papin, as Annie, brings a steady presence, especially after losing her husband. Together, they create a powerful duo.

The other women in the cast also bring their own flair. Liz Curtis adds humor as the oldest member, while Mayme Paul brings a cool sophistication. Understudy Stefanie Diaz nails the role of single mom Cora with just the right mix of sass.

While each character has their own journey, it’s Rose Lamarre as Ruth who really tugs at the heartstrings. She perfectly captures the essence of a people pleaser who’s been taken advantage of. Her performance is both touching and relatable.

Kudos to dialect coach Sarah-lee Dobbs for making the actors sound authentically Yorkshire to American ears.

Director Gaetanos has a few moments where the staging could be better, and some scenes get a bit loud. But he really shines in the big nude photo shoot scene, using clever props and lighting to create a fun atmosphere.

“Calendar Girls” reminds us that laughter and friendship are what make life enjoyable. It’s definitely a night worth experiencing at the theater.
