Cumbria: It was a big day for the Nutter brothers at the cross country championships. They both snagged gold medals, making it a family celebration.

Scott, 22, took home the win in the senior men’s race, while 18-year-old Ben dominated the under-20 men’s race. They both hail from Blencogo, near Wigton.

This was Scott’s second victory at the championships. He was back home during his Christmas break from Wingate University in North Carolina.

Ben, still in school at Nelson Thomlinson, added this title to his growing list of local achievements. The two ran impressively at Hunter Hall School in Penrith.

Scott played it smart, hanging back early on before making his move in the third lap. He held on strong to finish first in the senior race.

Ben took charge in his race, pushing ahead on a steep hill early in the second lap and widening the gap to secure his first county title.

Their dad, Neil, couldn’t be prouder. He’s seen them both grow as runners since they were kids. They used to run for Barnsley Athletic Club before moving to Cumbria in 2020.

Neil mentioned how rare it is for two brothers to win titles on the same day. He enjoyed watching Scott run live, especially since he’s usually in the States.

Scott tends to focus on longer distances, while Ben excels in shorter races. Neil shared that Scott has even set a fast time for the 10,000m in the UK.

Ben is a county champion at 800m and has won the Wigton 10k for three years running. He trains with Graham Millican at Border Harriers.

Scott is wrapping up his studies in the USA, where he’s had a sports scholarship for four years. Neil noted how much emphasis is placed on sports there.

With both boys now driving, they often head out to the hills around Keswick for training. Neil and his wife Sally have always supported their running journey.
