Bolton: A special Holocaust Memorial Day service is set for January 27 at the Festival Hall in Bolton Town Hall. This year, it’s a big deal as it marks 80 years since Auschwitz-Birkenau was liberated.

Community groups are putting this event together, and they’ve got a lot to say. They remind us that while we remember the past, genocides have sadly continued in places like Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur.

They’re also calling for peace, especially with all the conflicts happening today in the Middle East and Ukraine. The organizers stress that genocide doesn’t just happen overnight; it starts with harmful words and targeting people based on who they are.

It’s a wake-up call for everyone to challenge prejudice and not be complacent. Two local teens, Alex Hopkinson and Sarah Ibberson, have even visited the death camps in Europe, which adds a personal touch to the event.

The Holocaust was a horrific attempt by the Nazis to wipe out the Jewish population in Europe. It all began when they took power in Germany in 1933, using propaganda and laws to strip away rights from Jewish people.

When World War II kicked off in 1939, the situation worsened for Polish Jews, who faced violence and forced labor. Many were confined to ghettos, where conditions were terrible, leading to countless deaths.

By 1941, the Nazis had a plan called ‘The Final Solution’ to systematically murder Jews. They used death squads and established camps, leading to the deaths of six million Jewish men, women, and children by the end of the Holocaust.

The memorial in Bolton will start at 10 am and wrap up by noon, so it’s a chance for everyone to come together and remember.
