The Blackhawks’ recent loss to the Oilers disrupts their new five-game segment plan
Chicago: The Blackhawks are trying something new this season. They’ve split their schedule into five-game segments, aiming for specific goals in each. But their recent 4-3 loss to the Oilers really threw a wrench in their plans.
Interim coach Anders Sorensen didn’t spill all the details, but he mentioned they’re tracking everything from wins to smaller habits. Forward Jason Dickinson added that they even have targets for each game. It’s all about keeping things in perspective.
“If things are going well, you’ve still got to focus on the next game,” Sorensen said. “And if they’re not, you look to the next segment. It’s all about building good habits.”
Despite a rough start to the back-to-back games, the Hawks jumped out to a 3-1 lead against the Oilers. But then the momentum shifted, and the Oilers came back strong. Corey Perry tied it up, and Zach Hyman scored the game-winner on a power play.
Defenseman Alec Martinez pointed out that they need to play a full 60 minutes. “It’s about details and habits,” he said. “When you don’t do that, you let other teams back in.”
They kicked off this segment with a win against the Avalanche, so Dickinson is hopeful. If they can beat the Flames and Predators next week, they could still finish strong. But honestly, it’s hard to feel confident with how they’ve been playing.
Philipp Kurashev’s performance has been a hot topic. He didn’t show much effort on a key play against the Red Wings, leading to a goal. After sitting out several games, he was expected to step up but ended up being scratched again.
Sorensen expects more from him and the whole team. Kurashev’s future with the Hawks looks uncertain at this point.
On a brighter note, Teuvo Teravainen had a goal and an assist against the Oilers, continuing his strong play against them. Connor Bedard’s nine-game point streak ended, but he wasn’t the only star who struggled that night.
The Hawks almost went two games without a power play, but they finally got one in the last minute. They’ve had a tough time drawing penalties lately, with just three opportunities in their last four games.
