Chicago: The Blackhawks have had a string of first-time NHL coaches lately, and it hasn’t gone well. With that in mind, GM Kyle Davidson is likely looking for someone with NHL experience for the 2025 coaching search.

But then there’s David Carle, the University of Denver coach, who’s making waves in the hockey world. His success could shake things up a bit.

The Hawks need to think about how much risk they want to take this time. It’s a bit like the Bears’ situation, but Davidson has said interim coach Anders Sorensen will stay on until the season ends.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman pointed out that the Hawks are in a unique spot as the only NHL team without a permanent coach. They could make a move for Carle before anyone else does. He might want to finish the NCAA season first, but a verbal agreement could happen anytime.

Carle’s stock has soared after leading the U.S. to gold medals at the world junior championships and winning two national titles with Denver. At just 35, he’s got an impressive track record.

He’s also familiar with some Hawks prospects, which could work in his favor. The Hawks have a history with Carle, thanks to former prospect Ian Mitchell’s time at Denver. Mitchell praised Carle’s communication skills, which could be a big plus.

Friedman noted that Carle has the power to say no, having turned down offers from teams like the Blues and Devils. He’s in a good spot where he loves coaching and wants to win, not just chase money.

However, past hires like Jeremy Colliton and Luke Richardson show that a strong resume doesn’t always translate to success in the NHL. That’s why the Hawks might lean towards someone with proven NHL success.

There are experienced coaches available, like Jay Woodcroft, who had a solid record with the Oilers, and Bruce Boudreau, who has a long history of success. The Hawks could also look at current NHL assistants or AHL coaches, as Davidson hinted at during his press conference.

Sorensen is in the mix too, but the team will need to show significant improvement for him to be a strong candidate.
