Logan Square: Exciting news! The old Ravinia Brewing spot is transforming into the first Black-owned taproom in the neighborhood. Moor’s Brewing, which started in Bronzeville, is teaming up with Steep Ravine to create Diversey House at 2601 W. Diversey Ave.

Steep Ravine had to close its taproom last November, but this partnership is bringing beer back to the area. They’ll have around 10 beers on draft from both breweries, plus a full food menu crafted by Marc Anthony Bynum, a three-time “Chopped” champion.

Jamhal Johnson, co-founder of Moor’s, expressed how special it is to open during Black History Month. He sees this as a historic moment and aims to make it a success. With less than 1% of the craft beer industry being Black-owned, Moor’s was created to boost representation.

Diversey House is a bright spot in the local craft beer scene, especially after some recent closures. They’ll offer a variety of beers, including some unique collaborations and even hemp-derived THC options.

The first limited-release beer series will honor Patsy Young, a formerly enslaved woman who brewed beer to support herself. Johnson hopes to shed light on her story, with part of the proceeds going to the Care Moor Foundation.

Expect a sports bar vibe with 25 TVs and personalized audio at each table. Kris Walker, co-owner of Steep Ravine, is excited about the changes, including a beer garden and new murals by local artists.

Walker’s taproom had to rebrand after a legal issue, but he’s optimistic about this new venture. The owners connected through mutual friends and felt this partnership was the right move for both businesses.

Johnson has always wanted a taproom and dreams of opening a South Side location someday. He’s eager to bring a fresh perspective to Logan Square and redefine what a brewery and sports bar can be.

Diversey House will also feature a loaded hot dog bar and plans for fun events like trivia nights and screenings for big games. Bynum’s menu will include elevated pub fare, celebrating Chicago’s rich culinary scene.

He’s excited to join the team and create a space where food and community come together. Diversey House opens on February 5, kicking off with a Black History Month celebration featuring food, drinks from other Black-owned breweries, and live entertainment.
