Dallas: Two Texas lawmakers are stepping up to honor the late Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson. They’ve introduced a bill to rename the VA Medical Center in Dallas after her.

Sen. John Cornyn and Rep. Jasmine Crockett filed the bill to recognize EBJ’s incredible 30 years of service in Congress and her decade in the Texas legislature. If it goes through, the center will be called the “Eddie Bernice Johnson Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center.”

Before her political career, EBJ was a trailblazer as the first Black chief psychiatric nurse at the Dallas VA Hospital for 16 years. Rep. Crockett highlighted how Johnson’s legacy is felt throughout the district, from a train station to a STEM academy named after her.

Crockett expressed gratitude for Cornyn’s support, saying she looks forward to walking through the doors of the renamed center with him and the veterans Johnson cared for. Cornyn emphasized that this move would keep Johnson’s legacy alive, nearly 70 years after she started working at the hospital.

The bill has backing from other Texas lawmakers, including Sen. Ted Cruz and several representatives, showing a united front in honoring Johnson’s contributions to veterans and her community.
