Washington: President Joe Biden just announced that he’s commuting the sentences of almost 2,500 folks who were convicted of nonviolent drug offenses. This is a big deal!

With only three days left in his term, Biden has really made a mark. He’s granted more pardons and commutations than any other president in U.S. history. Pretty impressive, right?

These commutations are for people who are serving longer sentences than what they’d get today under current laws. Biden pointed out that many of these sentences were based on outdated rules, especially the unfair differences between crack and powder cocaine.

He mentioned that this move is a step toward fixing past mistakes and giving people a chance to reunite with their families after spending way too long in prison. It’s about time!

Biden also said he’s not done yet and will keep looking into more commutations and pardons. Just last month, he commuted the sentences of 37 people on federal death row, changing their sentences to life without parole.

Earlier, he had also commuted around 1,500 sentences for people in home confinement during the pandemic and granted pardons to 39 nonviolent offenders. It’s clear he’s trying to make a difference.

However, he did face some backlash for pardoning his son, Hunter Biden, over some serious charges. That was a bit of a twist from his earlier stance.
