Berks County: The Berks County Human Trafficking Task Force has been super active lately. Last year, they arrested nine people for trying to solicit minors and 20 for soliciting adults.

They also helped a local police department with a labor trafficking case, freeing two victims from their exploiter. This was all part of their 2024 Year In Review report, shared by District Attorney John T. Adams on National Human Trafficking Awareness Day.

Adams is really proud of the task force’s work. He mentioned that many folks might not realize how serious this issue is, which is why the task force is so important.

The team includes local, state, and federal law enforcement, along with community partners. They conduct stings, support victims, and educate the community about trafficking.

From 2019 to 2023, over 350 human trafficking cases were filed in Pennsylvania. The report emphasizes that trafficking is a human rights violation that affects everyone in Berks County.

Their mission is to investigate and prosecute those involved in trafficking, using a victim-centered approach. In 2024, they conducted two stings targeting those seeking sexual contact with minors and adults.

In April, they rescued two individuals from a labor trafficking situation, providing them with safe housing and resources to prepare for court. The victim advocates played a crucial role in supporting these individuals during this tough time.

ZOE, an organization fighting human trafficking, rallied community support, and local churches stepped up with donations. This generosity turned a crisis into a hopeful story of recovery.

The task force is ready to assist victims right after rescue, thanks to their partnership with ZOE. In 2024, ZOE advocates helped six victims during task force operations, connecting them with services.

They focus on preventing trafficking and educating the community. They provide emotional and legal support for victims and survivors, helping them navigate court cases and investigations.

ZOE advocates work closely with victims to meet their needs and connect them with resources. They also offer training to various community groups, including schools and healthcare workers.

Last year, they trained staff from Berks County Children and Youth Services and hosted sessions for over 60 law enforcement officers to improve coordination and outreach.

The task force partnered with North Star Initiative to open an emergency shelter for trafficking survivors in 2024. The report also shared survivor stories, like that of “Diane,” who was first met during a sting.

Diane had been trapped in exploitation since she was 19 but turned her life around with the help of a ZOE advocate. She shared that getting caught in the sting was the best thing that ever happened to her, as it led her to a legitimate job and a fresh start.
