The Beacon Museum will host an exhibition highlighting West Cumbria’s industrial legacy from January 18 to March 30
Whitehaven: An exciting art exhibition is about to kick off at The Beacon Museum. It’s called ‘Inspired by Industry’ and runs from January 18 to March 30.
This show will feature some amazing works, including 11 pieces by the talented Percy Kelly that haven’t been seen before. He’s a big name in Cumbrian art!
The artworks come from the museum’s own collection, along with community contributions and some on loan. They’ll showcase how West Cumbria has changed over the years.
You’ll see pieces that reflect the region’s journey from coal and iron ore mining to becoming a hub for steel, textiles, chemicals, and even nuclear energy.
Each piece is meant to capture the spirit of West Cumbria. Councillor Anne Quilter shared that this exhibition really shows off the creativity and resilience of the area.
She praised the Beacon team and their co-curators for their hard work in bringing this vision to life. It’s a fantastic showcase of the region’s industrial past.
Throughout the exhibition, there will be informal talks by the co-curators. They’ll dive into the artists’ stories and the themes behind the collection.
Plus, there’s a special talk by Chris Wadsworth on February 1, focusing on Percy Kelly and his connection to the cultural changes of the 1960s. Sounds like a great way to learn more!
