Liverpool’s Arne Slot adapts tactics as Jamie Carragher pushes for a defender
Recently, Liverpool had a mixed bag of results, with draws against Manchester United and Nottingham Forest, a loss to Spurs, and a win over Accrington Stanley. Fans are already calling for new signings.
Jamie Carragher has been vocal about needing a new defender in January after the Nottingham Forest match. While many agree, it’s not that simple. The left-back position seems to need the most attention, but unless one of the current players, Andy Robertson or Kostas Tsimikas, leaves, there’s no room for another.
Instead, Slot is making the most of what he has. With Ibrahima Konate still regaining fitness, he had to adjust his lineup, moving Ryan Gravenberch into a hybrid role to help out defensively while chasing a goal.
Wataru Endo has also been doing something similar lately, which can work in certain situations. If Liverpool is in control, it could be a smart move. Virgil van Dijk can handle the pressure, and Konate should be back to full fitness soon.
Slot mentioned in his post-match press conference that he can still strengthen the team with the substitutes available. He encouraged his players to stay focused and not get frustrated, and they ended up creating plenty of chances.
As long as Liverpool keeps its composure, they can still aim for the title without needing to sign a defender, although having an extra player in the backline would be a nice safety net. Gravenberch and Endo have already shown they can step up when needed.
