Anderson: The Anderson Redevelopment Commission just gave the green light for an updated agreement with SAICA. They’re building a big cardboard facility, and it’s a $130 million project.

They decided to extend the agreement by a year. This was necessary because a company official passed away, which slowed things down a bit. Greg Winkler, who runs the Economic Development Department, mentioned that this facility will be SAICA’s second U.S. plant, following their one in Ohio.

Right now, they’re in the process of buying land on Park Road. Construction was supposed to kick off last April, but now it looks like it won’t start until May at the earliest. The plant is expected to be up and running by 2027 and will initially create 56 jobs, with plans to grow that number to 114.

Winkler also shared that the jobs will pay pretty well, between $75,000 and $80,000 a year. There are plans to improve Park Road, including widening it and relocating power lines. The city got a $600,000 grant from the state to help with these upgrades.

Last year, the city council approved a $5.4 million bond for SAICA, and the Redevelopment Commission is also backing the project with $10 million in tax increment financing. SAICA has a global presence with 107 facilities and around 10,000 employees.

Winkler noted that the bonds will be paid back through increased property taxes, with the company expected to contribute about $20 million in taxes over the bond’s lifespan. They’ll also have signage to guide truck traffic efficiently.
