Amtrak has canceled several trains in the Chicago area as the city braces for its first sub-zero temperatures of the year.

Chicago: Amtrak is pulling the plug on several trains as a cold snap hits the city. They’re expecting temperatures to drop below zero this weekend.
One of the canceled trains is the Empire Builder, which was supposed to leave Union Station at 3:05 p.m. on Monday. Amtrak shared this news on X, formerly Twitter.
Two more Empire Builder trains heading to Portland and Spokane are also off the schedule, along with a Borealis train that was set to arrive in St. Paul.
Another Empire Builder train, scheduled to leave for Chicago, will only run from Seattle to Spokane now.
They’re predicting a drop of nearly 30 degrees from Friday to Sunday, with wind chills hitting the coldest levels seen in a year by early next week.
Wind chills could reach 20 to 25 degrees below zero, with actual lows expected to be around five to six degrees below zero on Sunday and Monday nights, according to the National Weather Service.
This cold snap should stick around until midweek, when temperatures are expected to slowly rise back into the 20s and 30s.
As of Thursday morning, Metra officials didn’t expect any service disruptions due to the cold. CTA officials recommend checking their website for any potential delays.
