Senator Adam Schiff advocates for an independent commission to assess California’s wildfire response amid ongoing devastation in Los Angeles

In a recent interview, Schiff emphasized the need to focus on extinguishing the flames and protecting lives and property first. He expressed hope that President Trump would collaborate with California leaders to secure funding for relief efforts.
The wildfires have already consumed over 40,000 acres and destroyed more than 12,300 structures, fueled by strong Santa Ana winds. These winds have made firefighting efforts even tougher, and some hydrants ran dry when firefighters needed them most.
Governor Newsom has ordered an investigation into the city’s water department, but Schiff wants a broader review. He raised concerns about misleading evacuation alerts that could put lives at risk if people don’t trust them.
The Pentagon has readied troops and helicopters to assist, but resources are limited. Schiff noted that while there’s been a lot of support from across the country, safety and logistics are key factors in deploying more aircraft.
Both Trump and Elon Musk have criticized local leaders for the water shortages, which officials attribute to the high demand from battling multiple wildfires. Newsom has invited Trump to see the damage firsthand, while Biden has expressed hope for continued federal support.
Schiff stressed the importance of unity during this crisis, urging the incoming president to work closely with California to help victims recover and rebuild. Fellow Senator Alex Padilla echoed this sentiment, suggesting that this is a chance for Trump to bridge divides and unite the country in support of California.
