The A555 Manchester Airport Relief Road has reopened partially after floods caused by heavy rain on New Year’s Day disrupted traffic.
Manchester: The A555 Manchester Airport Relief Road is back in action, at least partially. It had to close after some serious flooding on New Year’s Day. You might have seen those wild photos of cars stuck in water—it was quite a sight!
Stockport Council gave an update saying the part of the road in Stockport is now open. But heads up, there are still some detours in Cheshire East. So, if you’re driving, keep that in mind.
That heavy rain on New Year’s Eve really did a number on Greater Manchester. Over 1,300 folks had to be evacuated because of the flooding. The A555 was one of the worst-hit areas.
Even though parts of the road are open again, access to the M56 is still blocked. If you’re heading to Manchester Airport, be prepared for some delays. Better to leave a bit earlier just in case!
Good news for travelers, though—Manchester Airport is still running as usual. They’ve advised everyone to allow extra time to get to their flights, just to be safe.
Stockport Council mentioned that while the A555 is clear in Stockport, there are still diversions in Handforth. So, keep an eye out for those if you’re in the area.
It was pretty eerie to see the usually busy road so quiet. There was even a woman doing yoga right in the middle of the flooded A555—talk about making the best of a bad situation!
In Stockport, over 400 people had to be evacuated from Meadow Mill when the River Tame overflowed. The lower floors of the mill got completely flooded, which was a real mess.
Looking ahead, the weather isn’t looking too great either. We’re expecting snow, ice, and more rain this weekend. Metrolink trams will be running through the night to keep things moving.
With all this flooding and the forecasted icy conditions, the Bee Network is warning of possible disruptions. Danny Vaughan from TfGM said they’re doing everything they can to keep things running smoothly while also working on bringing more bus services under local control.
