This LA comedy blends humor with heartfelt moments, featuring Keke Palmer and SZA.
Los Angeles: “One of Them Days” stands out for a couple of reasons, one being a bit tragic. It’s a comedy set in LA, and it’s the first release since the wildfires hit on January 7. Those drone shots of West Hollywood and other neighborhoods feel different now, reminding us of what’s changed. Even the movie poster, showing the stars on a couch with a palm tree on fire, hits hard.
The timing is tough, especially since the wildfires delayed the LA premiere. But “One of Them Days” is still a fun watch, especially thanks to Keke Palmer. She’s a pro at just 31, with a career that started young. You might remember her from “Akeelah and the Bee” or “Nope.” She’s joined by SZA, who’s making her acting debut here, and they have great chemistry on screen.
The film kicks off at Norm’s diner, where Palmer’s character, Dreux, is juggling a busy shift while aiming for a management position. Her roommate, Alyssa, played by SZA, is a struggling painter dealing with a lazy boyfriend who wastes their rent money. They have just nine hours to come up with the cash before eviction.
It’s not a frantic race against time, but more of a series of comedic moments as they try to track down the boyfriend. They even make a pit stop at a blood bank for quick cash, which adds to the humor. The film has a bit of a slapstick vibe, but the writing keeps it grounded in reality, making it relatable.
As they face challenges like gentrification and payday loans, the characters remain resilient. The film’s climax brings some unexpected drama, but it’s all part of the ride. “One of Them Days” is about friendship and the ups and downs of life, and it nails that hangout vibe. Palmer’s comedic timing shines, and she keeps the energy high throughout.
While it might not change lives, it’s a feel-good movie that leaves you smiling, especially with its sweet ending. It’s a perfect watch for these times in LA.
