MERRILL: A tragic incident unfolded in Tomahawk where a 43-year-old woman is now facing charges for the stabbing death of a 50-year-old man named Richard Sanderson. Michelle M. Sanderson has been charged with first-degree reckless homicide, among other offenses, all linked to domestic abuse.

During her first court appearance, the judge set her bail at a hefty $250,000. A scheduling conference is set for January 23 to discuss the case further.

The situation escalated on January 9 when a man with a stab wound arrived at Aspirus Tomahawk Hospital. He was in bad shape, bleeding and struggling to breathe. A deputy spoke with Michelle at the hospital, where she claimed Richard had gone outside to work on something. She said she found him bleeding after hearing him call out.

A witness at the hospital reported seeing the couple argue throughout the night. He mentioned that Michelle had pulled out a knife during the argument, which looked like a steak knife. The witness claimed he saw her stab Richard and then drop the knife in the kitchen.

Investigators later found blood and the knife in the kitchen, supporting the witness’s account. An autopsy confirmed that Richard died from a stab wound near his windpipe. If convicted, Michelle could face nearly 62 years in prison.
